Should the Martin County School District create its own police force?

Well, that's an inartful way to put it. It's not like the district's considered hiring its own platoon of armed officers to roam the halls and keep would-be school shooters at bay.

Around Florida, school districts are doing just that.

Stuck between a fiscal rock and a monetary hard place, unable to afford sworn law enforcement officers in all schools but unwilling to place guns in the hands of existing employees, these districts hope to meet new security guidelines by forging a third path.

They plan to recruit and train armed school security guards, stationing them in schools that don't currently have a school resource officer…
