Should city police patrol Martin County schools?

And could that save taxpayers a few bucks?

On May 15, the Martin County School Board voted to ask the city of Stuart to annex three schools — Martin County and Jensen Beach high schools, and Felix A. Williams Elementary School.

Should city officials accede, it would double the number of county schools within the city limits — J.D. Parker Elementary, Stuart Middle and Spectrum Junior/Senior High schools are already there.

School officials could then ask city police to provide school resource officers at all six schools.

Previously, officers from the Martin County Sheriff's Office provided coverage. New state mandates in the wake of the Parkland school shooting require a school resource officer in every school.

That means hiring 11 new officers…
